Supply Chain Game & Company Review

Overview

The Game is used in part, to teach about the bullwhip effect and other common problems in supply chain management today. Teams try to manage a complex supply chain that holds inventory and moves product to meet customer demands - replicating the "real world", where barriers restrict communication between internal and external suppliers/customers; team members aren't allowed to talk to each other. Teams have to rely upon guesswork to try to make their supply chains work.

Objectives

Playing the game produces a unique set of data enabling the teams to analyse the impact of their decisions upon their supply chain management. From this experience they will be able to review their company's supply chain and identify opportunities for improvement.

Who Should Attend?

Supply Chain professionals as well as staff from other disciplines, who will benefit from a greater understanding of the process and principles of supply and demand. To generate greater improvements, companies should invite representatives from key suppliers and customers, to enable a full review of their supply chain activities.

Course Content:

The teams learnt that through improvements to their information and communication processes, benefits may be gained in planning and forecast accuracy. The trams considered the impact of their data upon inventory levels and identified improvements.

Key areas reviewed are the Principle of Postponement, delaying the uniqueness of a product (Magee-Anderson's 'square root law') to enable the amalgamation of demand, leading to reduced inventory investment and risk. They will also consider the need for improved information sharing along with joint planning, integration of the information process and the benefits of visibility. Key to this is the issue of trust, when companies are sharing commercially sensitive information. Consideration will also be given to Portfolio Management and the choices between small amounts of large suppliers, versus a large quantity of small suppliers.

Duration

The game and debrief session is planned to be used during a one day Supply Chain review and can be used for a company in-house, with the games' debrief focusing upon delivering a business improvement plan, for all parties involved.

NVQ

jigsaw"Cut waste and boost your productivity"

These qualifications are not an alternative to any other qualification, but are intended to maximise your company profits and revenues by the reduction of waste and implementation of 'best practice' throughout the business.

Our courses will help improve company responsiveness by optimising the use of people and physical assets, and thus make a real difference to the 'bottom-line'.

What is an NVQ?

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-related and competence-based qualifications. They reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and show that a learner is fully competent in the area of work the NVQ relates to.

There are no age limits and no special entry requirements.

What are the benefits?

Some of our success stories can be found here

Employers play a vital role in their contribution towards the development of standards for NVQs - so they really do meet employers' needs.

NVQs can help you improve productivity and competitiveness and ensure your employees have the skills and knowledge to meet your business needs. Many major companies use NVQs and find them valuable tools for both the development of employees and their business. Significant benefits have been reported by employers in terms of better productivity levels and an improvement in employee motivation, lower staff turnover, better staff-manager relations, improved staff recruitment, and also provide the opportunity to benchmark standards and provide training that can be more specifically targeted to needs.

The Apprenticeship Framework explains how the qualification is broken down into elements (click to expand)

The Apprenticeship Framework

An Apprenticeship is broken into four elements - Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR), National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), Technical Certificate, and Key Skills/Functional Skills.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

ERR is a compulsory part of all Apprenticeship programmes to demonstrate that the apprentice has had a full induction into their programme or company, and are aware of all the essential workplace rights and responsibilities.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

NVQs are work-related and competence-based qualifications. They reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and show that a learner is fully competent in the area of work the NVQ relates to.

NVQs are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment of the NVQ is generally through workplace observation and questioning to build up a portfolio of evidence - used to prove your knowledge and competence.

RTT Group have specialised in NVQs for many years now and will guide you every step of the way to achieving your qualification.

Technical Certificates

These are designed to develop your skills and knowledge in the technical aspects of the job you are doing. You could think of it as the 'theory' part of your Apprenticeship.

Key Skills/Functional Skills

These are the essential daily skills used both in and out of the workplace. There are six Key Skills:

  • Application of Number
  • Communication
  • Improving Own Learning and Performance
  • Information Technology
  • Problem Solving
  • Working with Others

Functional Skills is due to replace Key SKills by September 2010, although depending on your Apprenticeship, you may find your course incorporates this sooner. This will mean that you could be working towards a qualification in Mathematics, English, or even IT.
